Are we under the Law?

Sometimes I get questions in my inbox.
From tonight's email: """What is your take on this "law" question? Are we under law, or a portion of law, or what?"""

Here is how I answered *edited*:

"UNDER law" is an important phrase that carries alot of meaning. Specifically, that the jurisdiction of punishment is applicable to those that are "under law."

The 10 commands are found in Exodus 20 ... written by the finger of God. These laws are that which someone can be under and then again someone can appreciate / obey / want to obey even without being under them. I am not under the Law, for the jurisdiction of punishment does not apply to me.

I won't pretend to speak for anyone else, but I remember an online chat with a couple of people and the topic was obedience. So we were all agreeing that obedience is important and so on ... and I asked this question "AND WHAT if we are NOT obedient? What happens then?"

You can probably see where I was going with this question, can't you? I was seeing if we could make sure at this point that we are not putting ourselves under any law. So, if a reply came as some punishment or disapproval of us would result as an answer to that question, then it would indicate that someone is under law. OR, if there was no consequential punishment for disobedience, then it would indicate that we are not under law. Well, Emily said: "There is no "what if!"" In other words, there is no result / punishment ... for we KNOW that the full punishment for our sins were taken at Calvary ... and we have appropriated this to the utmost by faith and thankfulness.

So, in short we are not under law ... all of us, who have appropriated the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ on our behalf as the full punishment for all of our sins ... past, present and future.

Those who are under law ... or even under religious obligation / expectation, indicate their faith is incomplete or wavering ... about the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. And to do this is a great offense to God ... as if to say that what was done when Jesus died was not good enough.

The cure is thankfulness. We do not continually ask for forgiveness, as if we lacked it. Rather we take every opportunity to thank Him for forgiveness. And more so, knowing that He loves us so much, we want to stumble less often and to offer ourselves as living sacrifices ... already forgiven, but reporting to Him with abandonment and love to do as He would ask us, knowing that His commands are not a burden with the divine-enabling (grace) given of the Holy Spirit. Hallelujah!

Ripening,
Trent

PS. The religious nuts who have perverted the law .. .and sought to put people under the law should not be the only ones talking about the law. In fact, we, who understand its use and practice obedience through grace, should take back ownership of the terms "law" and "obedience" for we are the only ones that understand it and use it correctly. Lets not shrink back from these blessings, just because some jerk used them in a perverted way to make them as burdens and a curse. ... my two cents.

Amen.

Paul's 2 cents worth which he received from the Lord:

Ro 10:4 CJB-
For the goal at which the Torah(Law) aims is the Messiah, who offers righteousness to everyone who trusts.

Ro 3:31 KJV -
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
[Romans 3:31 CJB -
Does it follow that we abolish Torah by this trusting? Heaven forbid! On the contrary, we confirm Torah.]

Amen, Tim.

Suffice it to say that when Paul said that we are no longer "UNDER" the Law, whatever that means ... we know what it cannot mean. It cannot mean that we make void the Law, or Paul was being double minded.

Rather, we know from Paul's and James and John's and Peter's writings that the Law is a treasure and not a burden once we are out from UNDER it .. that is to say that it is no longer a tool (once faith comes) by which to be declared righteous.

It is sad for me that it took so long in my life to recognize and appreciate the treasure of the Law ... for in it I now see what exactly the LawKeeper (Christ) intends to fulfill in and through me by the Spirit, just as He fulfilled in His own body 2000 years ago. And what a blessing the fulfillment of the Law has become! Who knew that these commands are a simple recipe to the abundant life and that these commands are given as a means by which we may be fulfilled and blessed as they are performed in us by the divine enabling (grace) through the Spirit.

I suppose that if scientists created a chain of nuclear computers that could solve any problem ever thrown at them ... and were cooking on the task to simulate any possible way to live in order to discover behaviors for man to prohibit or allow into their life that could maximize man's enjoyment of life ... then the computer would ultimately discover what is already written in the scriptures as commands from the Lord.

The output for maximum enjoyment would read like this:

* Make God first, and focus on Him.
* Don't focus on what you make with your hands.
* Recognize the worthiness of God to be worshiped by using His name in no cavalier way, but instead as a sweet blessing.
* Take 1 day in 7 as a day of rest from caring for yourself.
* Take special care to honor your parents.
* Don't slay one another.
* Don't take things that belong to others.
* Don't speak about what isn't true.
* Don't lust for what is not yours.
* be poor in spirit
* mourn
* be meek
* hunger and thirst for righteousness
* be merciful
* have a pure in heart
* make peace
* have joy when treated badly
* be the salt and light of the earth
* be devoid of anger
* be prompt to reconciled to your brother
* hold nothing against another
* have a spirit of agreement
* have truth in speech and attitude
* turn the other cheek
* go the second mile
* love enemies
* pray for those that persecute you

Then ... as the computer system overheats we are left with nothing learned beyond what we already know from the Bible.

Ripening for the harvest,
Trent

Amen!

The Law(10 Com.) becomes the main fruit or "first-fruits" by which we recognize Christ in us and living through us, by which He also makes us an example to others.

If I may add something to your awesome Spirit enabled "to do" list:

You wrote: "* Take 1 day in 7 as a day of rest from caring for yourself."

Amen.

I would edit it to say:
"* Take 1 day in 7,[the same Day God rested on, and sanctified, and commanded we REMEMBER & keep holy - the 7th day] as a day of rest from caring for yourself."

Re 14:12 -
Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

Re 22:14 -
Blessed are those who DO His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.

Timothy,

Are you interpreting the verse in Rev. 22:14 to mean doing the Ten Commandments?

Secondly, how do you reconcile the TC's being the first fruits (or the main fruit) when Gal. 5:23 tells us that against the fruit of the Spirit there is NO law?

He has sinned as you have, as all have, and is forgiven equally to you and those who have sinned. Even those who have sinned greater or lesser than Timothy are forgiven equally of My Covenant.
