The false equation of "eternity" with "a long duration of time" cripples understanding within the church.1 John 5:20b ... Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Forever means "for the ever." So forever, is the continual span of time upon the formal plane of time. Eternity is quite different.
Eternity IS, when time is NOT.
God's existence is not contingient upon time, RATHER time's existence is contingient upon God. God existed as He is before time, before the first "ever," and God will continue beyond the final moment ... the last of all the "evers." God is beyond (or above) forever. And Eternity is not a measure of time.
ETERNITY IS LIFE AS GOD LIVES IT.
So, those with Eternal Life and those without Eternal Life will live forever. So what? Man, by default, has forever-life.
The Gospel declares that - Man, by the novel impartaion of the Seed / Spirit of God can have something beyond forever-life ... man can partake of the divine nature and have Eternal Life.
Why is this important? Well, forever life continues for all time, but time has a deadline. There is coming an end of time. There is a last day, and when that occurs, there will not be another day following it. Those with mere forever-life, have no foundation for existence. Those with Eternal Life will remain.
For it is written: There is coming a "last" day.
John 6:39
And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
John 6:40
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:44
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:54
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 11:24
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
John 12:48
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
Matthew 5:18
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Matthew 24:35
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
2 Peter 3:10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

"we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us."
